PAST EVENTS @ ST. JOSEPH'S HOME
St Joseph’s Home turns 25
by Staff Nurse, Gillian Beins (appeared on HospiceLink Dec 2003
issue)
St Joseph’s Home (SJH) celebrated its 25th Anniversary on 11 Oct 2003.
For some it was a day of recollection and reflection on the spirit and
life of SJH. For others it was a day of celebration.
A highlight of the auspicious day was the display of handicraft works by
some of the elderly residents. One resident, Tan Ghee Tham, had
skillfully carved beautiful ornaments such as doves, rabbits and the
Merlion out of pieces of wood. Another talented resident was Martha
Gomes, who, with the help of her occupational therapist, made and
displayer beautiful hand-sewn stuffed toys.
SJH was also very fortunate to have celebrated its 25th Anniversary in
conjunction with the Hospice Awareness Week. A huge sunflower wheel was
placed in the Home, and visitors were invited to pen words of
thanksgiving or condolence. They were also made aware of the different
hospices in Singapore and the services provided.
The celebration ended with dinner for everyone. It was wonderful to see
the elderly residents contributing their rich experiences and talents to
make the celebration memorable.
Sing
and Celebrate
by Staff Nurse, Chow Ah Hoe (appeared on HospiceLink Dec 2003 issue)
As part of SJH’s Anniversary Celebration, everyone, from the
administrator, care staff and residents of the home to the sisters as
well as volunteers, played a part in putting up the 25th Anniversary
concert.
A percussion band comprising SJH residents welcomed guests. Special
coaching was given to the residents for the band. Patience, perseverance
and encouragement won the day, as residents and caregivers sang and
danced. Thanks to teamwork, the concert was a huge success. It was a
special day for everyone.
